Postmodernism was an important intellectual movement in the period 1975–2000 that was noted for its attempt to replace the grand narratives of linear progressivism with a cultural re‐enchantment that welcomed ideas of chaos theory and deconstruction. There is an important difference, however, between postmodernity as a social formation, and postmodernism identified as a specific kind of stylistic invention involving a new ethic of tolerance of diversity, multiplicity, complexity, and heterogeneity.
