In contemporary Marathi and Indian literary cultures, Dilip Chitre continues to be an exemplary figure of the sāṭhottarī period, not only as a bilingual writer but also as an innovative artist in different mediums of representation. A cornerstone of Chitre’s lasting influence is his Anthology of Modern Marathi Poetry (1967), which still frames our understanding of modernism and modernist poetry, not only in Marathi but also in India’s broader multilingual dynamics of the early post-Independence decades. This chapter examines the Anthology’s remarkable legacy more than half a century after its publication as well as the contours of Marathi poetic modernism as they appear today through the lens of Chitre’s work as critic, translator, poet, and theorist.
