The theoretical significance of the insights provided by Marcel Mauss (1872–1950) can hardly be overstated. Originally trained as a philosopher, Marcel Mauss's main contributions lie in the disciplines of social anthropology and sociology. He mostly wrote essays and critiques rather than books, often in collaboration with others. His most famous legacy is his essay on The Gift , an ethnographic treatise on the social and cultural significance of exchange relations and the principle of reciprocity in so‐called primitive societies. This work is generally recognized as a masterpiece of theoretical thinking about the origins of human bonds and social solidarity.
