This entry provides a descriptive analysis of the term “socialism” according to the views of various social theorists. However, it focuses on a critical exposition of the meaning of socialism and socialist society conceptualized by the Marxist classics. Understanding what Marx, Engels, and Lenin meant by socialism and its class base (the working class), the entry contextualizes socialism as a system in transition from capitalism to communism. In socialism, the state is controlled and ruled by the working class – hence the term “proletarian socialism,” which signifies the class rule of the working class.
