The origins of the term “plural society” are found in the anthropological writings of Fredrik Barth and J. S. Furnivall. Barth and Furnivall argued that an ethnic group is composed of economic and ecological constituents. Boundaries between groups moderate when diverse specializations are found within a particular political unit.
