This chapter places the Chicago police torture scandal in historical and geographic context, tracing the life and career of Jon Burge from 1947 to 1972. The chapter argues that a series of perceived crises threatening working-class whites in South Chicago after World War II influenced a cohort of detectives to adopt illegal interrogation methods in the 1970s.
