Marriage, the nuclear family, and same‐sex marriage are concepts and lived experiences that have been shaped by cultural, economic, legal, and structural changes. This entry provides an overview of the transformation of the concepts of marriage, the nuclear family, and same‐sex marriage over time in Europe and the United States. Specifically, definitions for marriage, nuclear family, and same‐sex marriage are outlined and expanded upon. Each discusses intimate relationships between individuals. This entry also considers the nuclear family steering away from the “breadwinner/homemaker” vision, given increasing labor force participation of women; and it considers same‐sex marriage going from being illegal in the United States to a landmark case in 2015 that made it illegal to ban same‐sex marriage.
