Friedrich Engels worked closely with Karl Marx and coined the phrase the “materialist interpretation of history” as a summary of the latter's achievement in social theory. Engels's early book, The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845), represents a theoretically informed study of early industrialization and working‐class poverty, prefiguring spatial studies in urban geography. His manuscript drafts of 1845–1846, composed together with Marx, were published in the twentieth century as The German Ideology and circulated as foundational to Marxism. Another joint work, the Communist Manifesto , was anonymously published in 1848, and is always in print as a theorization of social history and political change. The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884) theorized women as an oppressed class and so generated a wide variety of critical feminist responses.
