Recent anthologies of queer writing from India in a range of languages are redefining the centrality of what was previously seen as a “niche” genre in the modern Indian literary canon. This chapter is a study of four major recent anthologies (which we can use as a tool, both pedagogical and one that also helps create the visibility of writers in a literary field) that give queer writing a more prominent place in Indian literary studies and raise important themes about what counts as queer writing; the place of gay, lesbian and trans writing in the larger body of queer writing; queer aesthetics; and the place of Indian queer writing within Indian literature and South Asian literature more broadly.
