The term “internationalization” has been used frequently, but consensus on what it actually means has not been reached yet, although several authors have stressed the importance of this topic. This article identifies three main characteristics of internationalization: increasing international involvement, crossing borders, and engaging in foreign – inward, outward, and/or linked/cooperative – operation modes. It also gives a short overview of other aspects that some authors have stressed in their definitions of internationalization.
