We have various written accounts of disagreements that broke out in the monastic communities in the Judean desert. One example is the dispute between Gerasimus and members of the laura he had founded near the Jordan River.2 According to the anonymous author of the biography of Gerasimus, some of the cell dwellers of the laura requested an improvement in their quality of life (permission to cook food in their cells and to light a lamp during night prayers), but Gerasimus rejected these requests outright.
