A necessary preliminary step toward defining the concept of “capitalism” is to define the concept of “capital.” This said, it is surprising how often this preliminary step is not taken. This entry gives a brief account of what is meant by the term “capital” before going on to say what is meant by the concept “capitalism.” In order to do this, both Marxist and Weberian perspectives on this question are considered. The entry then considers other writers on this subject – Hilferding, Keynes, Galbraith, Schumpeter, and, more recently, Piketty. It is argued that what critics and supporters alike often label “capitalist” economic systems might be more accurately characterized as “highly developed mercantile economies.”
