Ralf Dahrendorf (b.1929 in Hamburg, d.2009 in Cologne) was a German‐British sociologist, liberal politician, and public intellectual. His work combines theoretical and empirical contributions to sociological conflict theory with subtle analyses of contemporary society and politics. Dahrendorf developed his conflict‐theoretic approach based on a critical examination of Parsons's and Marx's theoretical approaches. In contrast to Parsons's consensus model of society, he suggested a conflict model as the more fertile alternative for the empirical study of sociological problems. In contrast to Marx, he did not perceive class conflicts as the necessary and all‐embracing type of social conflicts in modern societies, and thus developed a more general approach to different forms of social conflicts.
