In the history of socioreligious thought, sociologist Joachim Wach has been undervalued. This is probably because he dealt with different disciplines at the same time. After moving to the United States in 1935 as an exile from Nazi Germany, like his colleagues of the Frankfurt School, Wach wrote an essay on the sociology of religion. From religion as an object to be studied, Wach became more and more interested in religion as it was lived by people, through the experience of religiosity. An open-minded philosopher, Jacques Leclercq actively contributed to the overcoming of prejudices surrounding sociology&s;s presumably positivistic orientation. In 1948 he founded the CISR— the Conference Internationale de Sociologie Religieuse — of which he became the president. In 1948 Leclercq published an introductory book on sociology. Henri Desroche criticized Leclercq by claiming that sociology must be freed of theological, confessional, clerical, and ecclesiastical influences.
