The capabilities of the firm are the set of resources and competences that it relies on in order to survive and prosper. Resources are often classified in tangible (such as plants, money and employees) and intangible ones (reputation, brand image, and customer relationships). Competences refer to the skills and abilities that enable the firm to deploy its resources effectively through the organization's activities and processes. The portfolio of capabilities of the firm may be divided between those capabilities that are necessary in order to operate in a market (threshold capabilities) and those that enable the firm to obtain a competitive advantage leading to superior performance (unique resources and core competences).
