The Detroit Area Study (DAS) was established in 1951 at the University of Michigan with the purpose of creating a training and research laboratory. The aim was to carry out a social survey every year in the Detroit area in which students participated through a two‐semester graduate‐level course. It was housed in the Survey Research Center and financed by the Ford Foundation until 1958 when the university took over responsibility for the budget. DAS produced a large number of books, articles, and reports on family and marriage, voluntary associations, race, crime, and religion. It played a major role in the development of the social survey as a basic tool in social science research.
