Entre 1880 et 1930, l'Argentine etait un pays moderne grâce a une forte immigration. Dans les annees 1940-1950, la politique peroniste visait a favoriser de nouveau ce mouvement migratoire. La notion de melting-pot developpee a cette epoque, bien qu'evoquant apparemment l'egalite et l'homogeneite chez les immigrants et leurs descendants, contenait aussi les elements d'une ideologie de superiorite de certains immigrants sur d'autres et etait basee sur la supposition que les differences raciales justifieraient les differences sociales. Les concepts primordialistes et essentialistes actuels d'ethnicite semblent dependre d'explications reductionnistes biologiques pour le comportement social. Aujourd'hui, les immigres et leurs descendants reaffirment leur identite europeenne et souhaitent revenir chez eux
