Franklin H. Giddings (1855–1931) was a positivist early founder of American sociology. He modified the evolutionary perspective by placing importance on consciousness of kind. Although he conducted little original research, his advocacy of sociology as a research discipline and quantitative methods helped direct the field from a philosophical to a scientific endeavor.
