A distinct role morality would consist in special norms that are to guide the conduct of those in certain professional or business roles. These norms would elevate the values central to those roles relative to ordinary moral deliberation and limit the authority of agents in those positions to act on ordinary moral considerations. The special norms might be justified by appeal to the fallibility of role occupants in ordinary deliberation or to a moral division of labor. But when such special norms, for example, the pursuit of profit by business managers, override ordinary moral considerations, common moral rights will be sacrificed in the process.
