Romantic nature is understood as an irrational value-sphere. The basic ideal of a dehumanised wilderness is examined through the consideration of this sphere’s origins in the 18th and 19th centuries, with Rousseau, Wordsworth and Kant the main examples employed. The internal values of beauty, innocence, purity and goodness are examined in the light of Weberian understanding, especially in terms of a paradoxical relation with the ethic of brotherliness. The Enlightenment values of freedom and equality, mixed with the meaning of salvation, have a specific presence within this sphere.
