This chapter examines the rules and principles of the international humanitarian law (IHL) concerning land warfare. It considers the IHL rules from the point of view of the foot soldiers and analyses the decisions made by commanders that violate the principles of IHL, including the use of prohibited weapons and giving orders that breach humanitarian rules. It argues that the underlying cause of many problems related to IHL land warfare principles frequently lies in weaknesses in implementation rather than in the substance of the rules.
