Discourse studies embrace the study of how human beings participate with and through language in social life. This stance is fundamentally intertwined with the transdisciplinary exploration of ideological discursive formations, manifested in linguistic and multimodal data patterns, to comprehend the processes of reproduction and transformation of social structures in local and global discourses. In this context, some current debates traditionally approached from research traditions in Latin America are, namely, social inequality, human rights, and multiliteracies. Regarding social inequality and human rights, studies have particularly focused on discrimination and trauma carved in the history of countries by political and economic repression. Research on multiliteracies have long been motivated by issues regarding the preservation of memorialization processes through education. To sum up, Latin American discourse studies have a long tradition of analyzing and describing the mechanisms of oppression in their regional discourses, but it has also tackled alternative discursive practices that show powerful agency and promote positive social changes.
