Evidence for ancient breastfeeding is abundant but difficult to interpret. It relates mostly to the upper classes and to slaves, and more to breastfeeding by wet‐nurses than by mothers. The extent of maternal breastfeeding must be assessed through comparative studies. Breastfeeding was the object of debates in antiquity.
