Despite its numerical connotations, the concept of minority in the social sciences has a variety of dimensions. Louis Wirth's classic definition included three elements: size, discrimination, and the awareness of deprivation. Minorities also pose a major problem for democratic societies when it comes to combining majority rule while preserving minority rights. Several attempts have been made to find solutions to these conflicting demands, but in most situations they remain works in progress.
