This Inventory of poleis of the Archaic and Classical periods is the result of an investigation conducted by the Copenhagen Polis Centre in the years 1993–2003. The Polis Centre is a research institution set up and funded by The Danish National Research Foundation for a ten-year period which expired in September 2003. As the name of the Centre reveals, its assignment has been to study the polis.
