Nomadism is a historical phenomenon and one of perception and construction. There have been accounts of nomads in literature of the Greco‐Roman world since Homer. They have been influenced by contacts, exchanges, and wars with nomads in the Danube‐Black Sea area, Northern Africa and the Syrian Arabic area. Constructions of auto‐ and hetero‐images of the nomad also merge with the image of the barbarian, and depending on the regional and historical context they either idealize or conjure negative critical representations of nomads.
