China's hukou system regulates its population according to a number of spatial categories, most notably rural and urban status. It has produced and sustained a dual structure and society for more than five decades. Beyond its centrality to China's development, the hukou system serves as an example of state interventions in space, the production of inequality, and the institutionalization of socioeconomic discrimination. The hukou system can be theorized along with other historical and modern forms of spatial segregation and rural–urban divisions.
