I discussed earlier the notion of political community and showed why and how it was appropriate to think of the African nation-state as an imagined community. This is important. For however we may regret the salience of the nation-state, it is, as Benedict Anderson shows, the key contextual determinant of national and international politics today. 2 Without an adequate understanding of the African post-colonial nation-state there can be no understanding of contemporary African politics. 3 These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
