This entry discusses pragmatic aspects of global English as today's most important lingua franca. The first part examines the concept of “lingua franca,” and details the nature of English as a lingua franca (ELF) as well as the role of ELF in a globalized world. The second part is then dedicated to a description of several empirical studies on the pragmatics of ELF. The research on pragmatics reveals ELF users as bilingual or multilingual speakers who use the languages at their disposal to perform functions such as marking identity, attitudes, and alliances; signaling discourse functions; conveying politeness; and creating aesthetic and humorous effects or pragmatic ambiguity. These results have prompted a radical rethinking of the norm against which speakers' pragmatic discourse behavior is matched.
