The term transracial adoption refers to the joining of racially different parents and children together in adoptive families. While the term can refer to any adoptive family where the race of parents and children differ, it is used most frequently in reference to the adoption of nonwhite children by white families. Because transracial adoption places an emphasis on racial differentiation, it can include both domestic adoptions and transnational adoptions where the race of the child differs from that of the parents. The racial differences between parents and children in adoptive families have been the source of social and political debate for the better part of the twentieth century and early twenty‐first century with a particular emphasis on the racial identity construction of transracial adoptees.
