The concept of queer spaces conveys a critique of heteronormativity in society and its inherent spatial dimensions. This involves criticizing comprehensively the dominance structures and power‐ridden spatial dimensions of society. Queer space is neither a homogeneous concept – a space container – nor a static one; it is rather an interrelational concept that shows how power and dominance structures are enacted by means of social hierarchies, categorizations, and their intersections. Debates in queer urban studies show that social processes always have a spatial dimension that is dynamic in terms of the appropriation of space and the struggles of radical social alliances over power and against hegemonic and neoliberal developments, while producing new normalizations, violent exclusions, and contested interpretations at the same time.
