The koine eirene (common or general peace) is a diplomatic construct typical of the fourth century bce . Several such overarching treaties applied in the Greek world between 387/6 and 338/7 in order to build a lasting and stable peace. In the hands of the mighty poleis , however, these treaties, which were based on the principle that all cities, small or big, were free and independent, in fact became instruments of imperialism designed to secure them the hegemony in the Greek world.
