Teamwork is stressed by almost all practicing anthropologists as a key element in today's workplace, and yet most of us are still trained as individual researchers. This chapter discusses teamwork, in particular, teamwork with people from diverse disciplines. Good communication skills are essential in cross-disciplinary work and teamwork across and within disciplines. The author dicusses a few examples that illustrate the challenges faced and the approaches that have in practicing anthropology in cross-disciplinary teamwork. The stages of team development and tasks for team leaders at each stage, to provide a useful guide for team maintenance, are summarized. These stages of team development are drawn from organizational theory on the common phases that most new teams go through as they evolve. For each stage of team development, the key tasks of team leaders are noted. Finally, the chapter provides a few tips for anthropologists working on cross-disciplinary teams.
