This chapter provides an overview of how study of the socio-psychological motivations for CS evolved to become a major research topic. This development can be attributed to a number of factors, but the stimulation offered by the work of John Gumperz on CS was crucial. Gumperz’s own work is discussed in some detail and that of others who have followed him in the attempt to interpret or explain CS is surveyed.
