There is a remarkable similarity between R.J. Vincent’s intellectual trajectory and that of his mentor, Hedley Bull. Both had an interest in strategic studies (although Bull’s contribution was more pronounced in this area1), both deployed Wight’s three traditions as a means to engage with classical theorists, and most significantly of all, they shared a theoretical investigation into the nature of order and justice in international society. Yet their common institutional affiliations and theoretical interests does not begin to convey the extent of their meeting of the minds. This is best illustrated by Vincent’s admission that, even after Bull’s death, his influence could ‘be found on every page’ of his work.2
