Hecataeus of Miletos (ca. 560–480 bce ), a prominent intellectual and logographer of the Ionian Enlightenment, made a famous map and wrote two books: the Periegesis , a pioneering work on geography, and the Genealogies , a rationalizing account of the age of heroes. His work survives only in fragments, but it represents an important step in the intellectual history of Greece and a crucial prose antecedent to Herodotus’ History .
