Founded in Etruria as a Latin colony in 273 BCE , Cosa is situated on a promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea near Monte Argentario ( Cosa I ). Presumably named after a nearby Etruscan site Cusi or Cosia, Cosa was a thriving city whose livelihood depended upon rich agricultural production, fishing, and trade and whose leading citizens included the Sestii and Domitii Ahenobarbi.
