Visuality and its interrelation with the spatial has become an emerging field for critical scholarly research after the visual turn in geography. Employing diverse epistemological concepts, a variety of research perspectives can be identified, ranging from the iconographic analysis of visual media to critical cartography and, quite recently, to nonrepresentational performative approaches to visuality as an embodied material practice. In geography education, critical reflective visual literacy is currently being adopted as a basic postmodern competence.
