Hermippos ( FGrH 1026) was a native of Smyrna in Asia Minor but lived in Alexandria in Egypt, in the second half of the third century bce . He wrote biographies of philosophers, poets, orators, and historians; several titles of his writings and numerous fragments from his works have survived. Hermippos’ biographies belong to a type of literary production that is considered a special form of historiography. In antiquity they were highly esteemed and were often used by later authors.
