Paul of Aigina ( fl . seventh century ce ) was an important physician of the Byzantine period who wrote a compendium dealing with illness, surgery, and pharmacology. His medical handbook was intended to serve as an encyclopedic record of major ancient and early Byzantine Greek doctors and herbalists. Paul's work, through Syriac and Arabic translations, greatly influenced Islamic medicine and the development of Western medicine.
