Geographic information science (GIScience) refers to the scientific study of geographic information, its creation, characteristics, structure, analysis, and transformations, as well as the community of experts that specialize in those topics. However, a deeper understanding of GIScience requires an understanding of three complementary perspectives: the development of GIScience; the distinct styles of inquiry and knowledge creation used in GIScience; and the shared expertise common to those connected with the field.
