Willem Bonger was a Dutch scholar best known for his application of Marxism to criminology in his work Criminality and economic conditions , first published in 1905. Not only was this the first attempt to create a Marxist criminology, but Bonger also was the central figure in the establishment of criminology in the Netherlands. His sophisticated view of the socioeconomic causes of crime in capitalism retains its relevance to this day, in particular his notions of “egoism” and “demoralization.”
