Of the three methods by which a Roman woman could enter into the manus of her husband ( confarreatio , usus , and coemptio ), only confarreatio seems to have been understood by Romans as a religious wedding ceremony accompanied by the acquisition of manus . Usus implied cohabitation for one uninterrupted year, and coemptio the exchanging of goods or money in a symbolic sale.
