The traditional system of tillage has been considerably modified as a result of the instruction and aid given by the Agricultural Department, both directly and indirectly by supervising the agricultural instruction imparted by mission and government schools. Compared with the far-reaching changes in the traditional system of agriculture, the development of animal husbandry along modern lines has not progressed very far. Hunting and fishing, trapping and the various food-gathering activities play a comparatively insignificant role in the system of production. The agricultural and veterinary services jointly aim at the development of what is technically known as mixed farming. The steady growth in population during the last few decades and, still more, the increasing production of surplus crops for sale have caused such an intensification of agricultural production that the natural recuperation of the soil by shifting cultivation is no longer possible, at least not in the densely settled southern parts of the District.
