This chapter explores the role of language policy in the social construction and reconstruction of cultural identity by examining the case of Hong Kong in the colonial and postcolonial eras. The emergence of a local identity was not solely due to the factors suggested previously, which seemed to have little to do with the colonial government. The oppressive colonial rule from the beginning of colonization to the late 1960s could be characterized as a process of desinicization, which is a form of denationalization involving the establishment of English hegemony, historical deprivation, deculturation, and depoliticization. After more than 160 years under British colonial rule, the decolonization of Hong Kong and its reunification with mainland China have inevitably raised the question of its collective identity and how it is being redefined. The most important symbolic change in language policy is the implementation of mandatory mother-tongue education in Hong Kong.
