Health is a dynamic and multidimensional concept that is central to many aspects of human life. This entry presents multimodality in health communication both as practice and as a vast, interdisciplinary field concerned with how multiple modes, or meaning‐making resources, are used by health professionals, patients, care partners, and others to communicate about health, well‐being, and illness. The entry gives a brief introduction to text‐based and interaction‐based research areas, then explains more in‐depth how the methodology of multimodal social semiotics approaches health communication. To illustrate a variety of issues addressed by this methodology, the entry then offers three examples of, respectively, practitioner–patient relations, patients' illness narratives on social media, and a project on cultural influences on health promotion in global contexts.
