This chapter will deal with the history of sensation and perception, beginning with the perceptual problem, which asks, "How do the objects, object properties, relationships between items, and the metric of space and time come to be represented in consciousness?" At a second level it will discuss the correspondence problem, which asks, "How accurate are these perceptions?," "How well do they represent the external reality?," and "Why do we encounter systematic distortions and illusions?" In the process of answering these questions, the chapter will deal with the relationship between sensation, perception, reason, and cognition. It will also deal with how the understanding of physiology and physics at various historical eras facilitated or inhibited understanding the perceptual and correspondence problems, leading to behavioral, psychophysical, gestalt, and cognitive approaches to sensation and perception.
