‘EGONE equestri et provinciali loco ortus proceribus civitatis adnumeror ?’ In these words Tacitus’ Seneca expresses, at the moment when he was about to lose his great power and position, his amazement at what he had achieved. By comparison, his start as the son of a wealthy gentleman and scholar of Corduba in Spain seemed modest indeed.
