Although the word encyclopedia is modern, first attested in the works and correspondence of late fifteenth century Italian humanists, mentioned by Rabelais (1532), Ringelbergh (1541), and Skalić (1559), and made popular in the wide‐ranging volumes of Chambres (1728) and Diderot and D'Alembert (1751–65), its conceptual as well as etymological roots are to be found in Classical antiquity.
