Elliott Currie is an American sociologist who obtained his PhD at UC Berkeley. He is currently a professor of criminology, law, and society at UC Irvine. As well as being a proponent of the theory referred to as “left realism,” he expanded on the concept of the “market economy,” and its relation to crime, within his theoretical framework. In 1985 he wrote his seminal work, Confronting crime: An American challenge . In 1997 he published Crime and punishment in America: Why the solutions to America's most stubborn social crisis have not worked—and what will . This book was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize Non‐Fiction award. Currie is seen as one of the most influential criminologists in the field.
